Risks and prevention — Roofing
Roofing work accounts for a disproportionate share of fatal construction falls. The CSTC requires perimeter protection (guardrails) or personal fall arrest (harness with lifeline) on any roof where the worker is more than 3 metres above grade. Wet surfaces amplify the risk.
Torches used for bituminous membrane installation create a major fire hazard. A hot-work permit is often required and a fire extinguisher must be within 5 metres of the weld zone. The fire watch must monitor the area for at least 60 minutes after hot work ends.
Material storage on roofs must be limited and distributed to avoid point overloading. Membrane rolls and propane cylinders must be secured against wind and accidental movement.
