Safety checklist — Electronic security systems

Fire alarm, intrusion, cameras and access control. Compliant with Québec's Construction Safety Code (CSTC) and CNESST standards.

Before work

9 items
  • PPE worn: hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, safety shoes

  • Electrical and wiring plans reviewed — routes identified

  • Circuit voltage verified — work de-energized if possibleCritical

ℹ️ Even low voltage (24V) can be dangerous in wet conditions

  • Insulated tools and calibrated multimeter available

  • Coordination with other trades — no route conflicts

  • Cabling identified and labeled at each end

  • Wall/floor penetrations fire-stopped

ℹ️ Building code — fire rating integrity must be maintained

  • Detectors and devices installed at plan locations

  • Ladder or platform used for height work — never a chair

After work

4 items
  • Functional tests performed on every zone and device

  • Control panel programmed and tested — monitoring station link confirmed

  • As-built drawings updated and delivered to client

  • Basic training given to occupant on the system

Risks and prevention — Electronic security systems

Installing security systems (fire alarm, cameras, access control) involves low-voltage electrical work, drilling into existing structures, and work at height for sensor placement. The CSTC covers electrical work even at low voltage.

Drilling into slabs or walls can damage hidden rebar or conduits. A metal detector or GPR scan should be used before any penetration. Communication cables must be separated from power circuits per Electrical Code standards.
