Risks and prevention — Welding and cutting
Welding and oxy-cutting generate UV/IR radiation, toxic metal fumes, hot spatter, and major fire risk. RSST sets exposure limits for welding fumes (manganese, hexavalent chromium, zinc) and requires local ventilation or a filtering respirator.
A hot-work permit is generally required on construction sites. The fire watch must be present during work and for at least 60 minutes after. Compressed gas cylinders must be secured vertically, protected from impact, and stored separately (fuel vs oxidizer).
Eye protection suited to the welding process (filter shade per intensity) is mandatory. Leather or flame-resistant clothing protects against spatter and radiation.
