Safety checklist — Asbestos / Decontamination

Asbestos removal and decontamination work. Compliant with Québec's Construction Safety Code (CSTC) and CNESST standards.

Before work

14 items
  • Lab analysis confirming asbestos presence (expert report)Critical

ℹ️ RSST art. 69.1 — analysis mandatory before any work on suspected materials

  • Risk level determined (low, moderate, high) — work plan adaptedCritical

ℹ️ RSST Appendix I — risk level determines required measures

  • Workers trained for asbestos work (ASP Construction training)

  • PPE worn: disposable Tyvek coverall, P100 respirator or PAPRCritical

ℹ️ Minimum P100 for moderate risk — supplied air for high risk

  • Containment zone installed with polyethylene if moderate/high risk

  • HEPA-filtered air extractor under negative pressure in containment

  • 3-stage decontamination chamber installed (dirty → shower → clean)

  • 'DANGER — ASBESTOS' signage posted at all entrances

  • Materials kept continuously wet to suppress airborne fibers

  • No rotary power tools (saw, grinder) — use hand tools or low speedCritical

ℹ️ Sawing/grinding generates extremely high fiber concentrations

  • Debris placed directly in sealed bags labeled 'ASBESTOS'

  • Continuous HEPA vacuum — never dry sweep

  • Regular verification of negative pressure in containment zone

  • No food or drink in work zone

After work

5 items
  • Full worker decontamination at chamber before exiting

  • Disposable coverall removed inside out and bagged

  • Final air analysis performed — level < 0.01 fiber/cm³ to clear zoneCritical

ℹ️ Zone not clearable until air analysis confirms compliance

  • Asbestos waste bags transported to authorized landfill

  • End-of-work report completed and submitted (asbestos registry)

Risks and prevention — Asbestos and decontamination

Asbestos is the leading cause of fatal occupational diseases in Québec. CNESST and RSST strictly govern asbestos-related work: prior identification, risk assessment, removal method selection, and worker and environmental protection.

Asbestos work is classified by risk level (low, moderate, high). High-risk work requires a sealed enclosure under negative pressure, trained workers with supplied-air respirators, and air quality monitoring. Asbestos-containing materials must be disposed of at authorized sites.

Before any renovation or demolition of buildings constructed before 1999, an asbestos survey is strongly recommended. Even brief exposure to asbestos fibres can cause serious disease decades later.
