Risks and prevention — Masonry
Masonry work exposes workers to musculoskeletal disorders from repetitive block lifting, falls from scaffolds, and silicosis risk from morite and brick dust. RSST sets permissible exposure values for crystalline silica dust.
Masonry scaffolds must respect maximum loads per the manufacturer and CSTC. Material storage at height must be controlled to avoid overload and falling objects. Guardrails are mandatory on any work platform exposed to falls over 3 metres.
Using a masonry saw generates noise and dust levels requiring hearing and respiratory protection. Wet cutting significantly reduces silica exposure.
