Safety checklist — Concrete pouring

Pouring and vibrating concrete. Compliant with Québec's Construction Safety Code (CSTC) and CNESST standards.

Before work

11 items
  • PPE worn: waterproof boots, pH-resistant gloves, safety glasses, hard hat

  • Formwork verified, oiled and conforming to plan

  • Concrete delivery slip conforming (strength, slump, admixtures)

  • Vibrating needle and vibrator tested and functional

  • Mixer truck access clear — signal person in place if reversing

  • Overhead power lines identified — safe distance maintainedCritical

ℹ️ Minimum approach distance per voltage — see CNESST table

  • Pouring in regular lifts — drop height ≤ 1.5 m

  • Vibration applied without excess (avoid segregation)

  • Level and flatness checked during placement

  • Skin contact with fresh concrete avoided (chemical burn risk)

  • Pressure on formwork monitored — no deformation

After work

5 items
  • Surface floated/finished to specifications

  • Concrete curing applied if temperature > 25°C or strong wind

  • Equipment and pump cleaned immediately

  • Curing area secured and marked off

  • Wash water collected — no discharge to ground

Risks and prevention — Concrete pouring

Concrete pouring exposes workers to chemical contact with cement (alkali burns), pump and vibrator noise, concrete splash, and hazards from handling pump hoses. RSST and CSTC regulations govern protective measures on Québec construction sites.

Appropriate PPE is mandatory: waterproof boots, alkali-resistant gloves, safety goggles, and hearing protection near pumps. Fresh concrete can cause severe dermatitis after prolonged skin contact.

Coordination between the crane operator, pump operator, and ground crew is critical. Signals must be agreed upon before the operation begins. Workers must never position themselves under the concrete pump boom or in the path of a pressurized hose.
